In 2020, Joe and Rachel walked into Shark Tank looking for a $400,000 investment for 7% of their business, Yellow Leaf Hammocks. The idea started during a vacation to Thailand. Joe found an incredibly soft, handmade hammock woven by moms in a rural tribe. To help these families escape poverty, the couple decided to sell the hammocks globally.
Their colorful, weather-safe hammocks had a retail price of $199, while their premium "Hammock Throne" chair had a high purchase cost of $2,200. The Sharks loved the social mission. After a flurry of offers, Daniel Lubetzky made a huge $1 million investment for 25% of the company.
Right after the show, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, causing their cruise ship partnership sales to dry up. Instead of quitting, they shifted completely to online sales. The plan worked beautifully! In the three years after their episode, sales surged to $15.4 million. They went from selling 2,000 hammocks a year to 4,000 every month! Today, the business supports over 400 weavers, brings in millions in annual revenue , and has built a massive net worth as a true relaxation empire.
