In 2020, college graduate Melissa Bartow walked into Shark Tank with a sweet business idea: healthy, vegan spreads made from dates. She was seeking a $100,000 investment in exchange for a 20% stake in her company, Wanna Date.
The idea started when Melissa worked at an acai bowl shop and noticed that "healthy" foods contained way too much sugar. So, she created a low-calorie alternative to nut butter in her college dorm.
During her pitch, the Sharks questioned the production cost of each jar and worried about competing in a tough market. But Mark Cuban saw real potential in the product. He made a deal to invest $100,000 for 33% of the business.
After the show aired, sales skyrocketed! Every purchase helped the brand grow past $5 million in cumulative sales. The low-price spreads and new "Date Dough" treats hit store shelves nationwide in major retailers like Whole Foods, Walmart, and Kroger.
While the company eventually closed its doors in 2024 to let Melissa pursue new passions in wellness , Wanna Date proved that a simple dorm-room idea can grow into a multi-million dollar business!
