Scientists Develop “Puff Pastry Concrete” That Is 20 Times Tougher and Better at Insulating Heat
Scientists have developed an innovative cement-based material inspired by the layered structure of puff pastry. Called Puff Pastry Architected Cementitious Material (PPAC), this new material could help make future buildings stronger, safer and more energy-efficient.
Developed by a research team led by Kailun Xia, PPAC consists of alternating layers of solid cement and tiny plate-like cavities. This special architecture changes how cracks spread through the material, forcing them to follow complicated paths and absorb more energy before causing failure.
The results are impressive. PPAC achieves a specific fracture toughness of approximately 91 MPa·mm⁰·⁵/g·cm³, nearly 20 times higher than conventional cast cementitious material. It also maintains comparable specific flexural strength.
Another major advantage is thermal insulation. Its thermal conductivity is just 0.38 W/m·K, representing a 68.3% reduction compared with ordinary cementitious material. The internal cavities act as barriers that slow down heat transfer.
Unlike many advanced construction materials requiring complicated manufacturing techniques, PPAC can be produced through a simple rolling-and-folding process under normal room conditions.
The material could eventually help improve earthquake-resistant structures, reduce building energy consumption and support next-generation infrastructure.
However, further research is needed to improve its compressive strength, durability and industrial-scale manufacturing.
