How do you make drums sound bigger without letting the ambience muddy up a dense mix? In Superior Drummer 3, you can automate the actual recorded room microphones so they open up during a slow intro or breakdown and tighten when the arrangement gets faster and more crowded.

In this Superior Drummer 3 tutorial, we use the Death & Darkness SDX to build a custom drum ambience using the Ambience Far and Ambience Mono 2 channels. You’ll see how to isolate the snare with Superior Drummer 3’s bleed controls, process the room channels, bind several parameters to one Macro Control and automate the complete sound from your DAW.

Can you automate room microphones in Superior Drummer 3?
Yes. Bind the room-channel faders, reverb mix controls and other parameters to a single Macro Control, set the upper and lower limits, then write automation for that macro in your DAW.
Because these ambience channels were captured with microphones placed in different locations around the original recording room, they have a different character than simply adding reverb to a close snare microphone. Superior Drummer 3 also lets you control which instruments are heard through each room channel, allowing you to create a custom ambience balance for the song.

In this video, you’ll learn how to:
• Make drums sound bigger during intros and breakdowns
• Prevent room ambience from muddying up dense sections
• Automate recorded room microphones instead of only using a reverb send
• Control snare, kick, tom and cymbal bleed independently
• Combine and process multiple ambience channels
• Bind several mixer parameters to one Macro Control
• Set practical upper and lower limits for automation
• Automate the complete drum ambience sound from your DAW

The result is a drum mix that moves with the arrangement. The drums stay big where the song has space, then become tighter and more focused when the full arrangement comes in.
Although the example uses a metal production, this same drum-mixing technique can work for rock, pop, acoustic music and any arrangement that changes in density.
