Can you really add Dolby Atmos to a 13-year-old truck without rebuilding its entire audio system?

Pioneer’s new SPHERA DMH-WT8000NEX brings real Dolby Atmos decoding, wireless Apple CarPlay, a massive 10.1-inch display, and sophisticated cabin calibration to Caleb’s old Toyota Tacoma — and the result is far more convincing than it has any right to be.

Caleb explains when you’re hearing actual Dolby Atmos, what happens when regular stereo music is played, and why the flagship SPHERA 8000 is different from the less expensive 6000. He also digs into the sound quality, the calibration process that makes the Atmos effect possible, and how Pioneer can create an enormous soundstage with a relatively modest speaker system.

It isn’t perfect, though. The interface has a learning curve, some important controls are harder to find than they should be, and that giant screen definitely won’t fit comfortably into every vehicle.

But as the first aftermarket Dolby Atmos receiver of its kind, did Pioneer knock it out of the park?
