One of the most surprising things about watercolour is that you don't actually need white paint to paint white objects.
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to paint a charming coastal cottage while keeping those beautiful white walls luminous and full of life. Rather than reaching for white paint, we'll use one of watercolour's greatest strengths: preserving the white of the paper itself.
You'll learn how to paint around key areas to create bright highlights, as well as how to use the softest, most diluted washes to suggest shadows, texture, and form. These subtle touches are what transform a flat white shape into a building that feels sunlit, dimensional, and full of character.
This is a wonderfully useful skill that can be applied to all sorts of subjects, from cottages and lighthouses to white flowers, boats, and animals.
Whether you're new to watercolour or looking to improve your understanding of light and value, this simple coastal scene is the perfect project to practise with.
Happy painting!
