I tested ChatGPT Work on real experimental data to see whether it's actually useful for academia and research, and the answer is a genuine "yes, but". This ChatGPT Work tutorial walks through what the new mode does well, where it falls over, and whether it's worth switching to.

ChatGPT now has three modes: Chat for normal conversation, Codex for code, and Work for deliverables like spreadsheets, reports and slide decks. I gave it my raw reaction time data, participant logs and study notes, and asked it to run the analysis, write a results summary and build a conference presentation. It did all three. It also took 17 minutes to produce a deck I could have made myself in about the same time, couldn't load my connectors on the first three attempts, and was noticeably clunkier than Claude for the same jobs.

So this is not a "best AI tool ever" video. It's what actually happened when I pointed ChatGPT Work at a real research project, including the parts that annoyed me.

What I cover:
▸ How to use ChatGPT Work and how it differs from Chat and Codex
▸ Setting up a project so ChatGPT can work with your data, folders and notes in one place
▸ The faster/smarter reasoning slider and when to turn it up
▸ Running an agentic prompt on raw experimental data (4 minutes to a results summary)
▸ Turning that analysis into a six-slide conference presentation (17 minutes, and honestly mediocre)
▸ ChatGPT scheduled tasks: an automated 8am literature sweep across arXiv, bioRxiv and Google Scholar
▸ The ChatGPT desktop app, running locally vs in the cloud, and why local access matters for your files
▸ What broke: connectors, browser control, and sync between desktop and web
▸ ChatGPT Work vs Claude Cowork for academic work
