Drawing on J.C. Moughtin's Hausa Architecture (pp. 55–56, the "Building Types" section this video explains why pre-colonial African architecture had almost no specialized buildings for education, industry, retail, or health away from the home and community. Economic and social life was a function of the home, not something delegated to separate institutions or professionals, and I go over how to achieve that level of self-sustainability today.
