What to Do When the Tap Stops Working

Recent water emergencies in Michigan, Maryland, Kansas, Florida, Iowa, Maine, and at the Grand Canyon have shown how many different ways a municipal water system can be disrupted. E. coli contamination, power failures, loss of water pressure, software problems, damaged infrastructure, chemical contamination, and major water-main failures can all create very different emergencies at the household level.

In this video, I look at several recent water-system incidents and focus on the preparedness lessons behind them.

I cover:
- Boil Water vs. Do Not Drink vs. Do Not Use advisories
- Why loss of water pressure can trigger a boil-water advisory
- How much emergency water I recommend storing
- Why I prefer multiple 5-gallon containers
- Bottled water vs. larger storage containers
- Water filters and their limitations
- Basic home water-testing tools
- How to receive local water emergency alerts
- What to do after an advisory is lifted
- My 3-layer household water preparedness plan

The goal is simple: have enough safe water, storage, treatment options, and information that you are not trying to build a water plan after the faucet becomes unreliable.
