I used a free AI literature review tool to generate a 62 page literature review with 160 real, linked references, and it took minutes. That is the good news and the bad news. If you are learning how to write a literature review, the document was never the point. The literature review was the modality we used to build a researcher, and if you hand that job to AI you quietly hand over the skills that make you employable in research.

In this video I show you exactly what Z.ai (GLM 5.2) produced for free on the prompt "create a literature review on novel materials for OPV devices", then I show Thesis AI, which gives you a citation report so you can see where the source actually supports the generated text. After that we get to the real argument. There is a published set of core competencies that describe what a capable researcher can do, from first year PhD student through to established science professional, and a generated literature review threatens five of them. Deep knowledge of a field. Recognising the questions that matter. Interpreting and evaluating conflicting data. Historical context and lineage. Broad conceptual knowledge across disciplines.

So this is the workflow that lets you keep the speed without losing the skills. Read the AI review as a map, not as knowledge. Check every single reference exists and actually says what the review claims. Interrogate it for the gaps it flattened. Disagree with it in writing, because that is the core competency nobody can outsource. Ask it for the lineage of your field, then correct it and locate your own contribution inside that story. Then rewrite the structure in your own words, because if you cannot re argue it, you do not understand it yet.

The danger is not that AI output is bad. The danger is that it is plausible. An experienced academic reads a generated review and immediately spots where it oversimplifies. A first year PhD student reads the same text and thinks it sounds about right, because they do not yet have the depth to know otherwise. That gap is where careers get quietly damaged.
