The Cleveland Browns quarterback competition is heating up, and the latest update isn't great news for Shedeur Sanders.

According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, veteran quarterback Deshaun Watson currently holds the edge in Cleveland's battle for the starting job entering the 2026 NFL season. While no final decision has been made, the Browns reportedly value Watson's experience and familiarity with head coach Todd Monken's offensive system.

Fowler noted that Watson believes Monken's scheme fits his strengths, particularly its flexibility and opportunities to create plays outside the pocket. However, the competition is far from over, as the Browns continue evaluating all options throughout offseason workouts and training camp.

Sanders, who generated significant attention during his rookie season, has reportedly shown flashes during spring practices and remains firmly in the mix. The former Colorado star started multiple games in 2025 and gained valuable NFL experience despite dealing with inconsistency and a challenging situation around him.

The Browns also have additional quarterbacks competing for roster spots, making this one of the most closely watched quarterback battles in the league heading into training camp.

With Cleveland hoping to finally stabilize the most important position on the field, every practice rep and preseason performance could have major implications for who takes the first snap of the 2026 season.
