10 things every junk journal needs!
New to junk journaling and not sure where to start? Welcome to Junk Journal Boot Camp!
In this beginner-friendly tutorial, I’m breaking junk journaling down into 10 simple building blocks you can use again and again.
And here's the important part: these aren't rules! Your journal can be incredibly simple or wonderfully elaborate. I’ll show you several different journals—from a composition notebook and a scrappy journal made with packing paper to a more elaborate three-signature hardbound journal—to show you just how different junk journals can be.
Then we’re going back to basics.
I start with just four pieces of folded paper, glue them together to make a super-simple NO-SEW journal, and use it to demonstrate all 10 elements:
10 Junk Journal Basics:
Journaling Space
Pocket
Tuck Spot
Journaling Card
Tag
Belly Band
Flip
Envelope
Tab
Simple Embellishment Cluster
Once you understand these 10 concepts, you can mix, match, repeat and build on them to create everything from the simplest little journal to a big, beautiful, interactive junk journal.
If you've ever looked at a finished junk journal and thought, “I don't even know where to begin,” this video is for you. Grab some paper and follow along. You really don't need anything fancy to get started!
