As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms healthcare, clinicians must understand both its capabilities and its limitations. In this foundational presentation, Natalie Isak provides a practical overview of the key concepts underpinning modern AI, helping cardiovascular professionals navigate an increasingly AI-enabled clinical landscape.

The session begins by addressing common misconceptions surrounding AI adoption, highlighting how predictions about widespread physician replacement have not materialised despite remarkable advances in machine learning and deep learning. Instead, AI is presented as a powerful tool that can augment clinical decision-making while still requiring expert human oversight.

Natalie then explores the evolution of artificial intelligence, clearly defining the relationships between artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, large language models (LLMs), and natural language processing (NLP). Through practical healthcare examples, she demonstrates how these technologies learn from data, identify patterns, classify information, and generate new content across a range of clinical applications.

Importantly, the presentation also addresses the ethical challenges associated with AI adoption. Drawing on contemporary research, Natalie examines issues surrounding bias, fairness, and representation in AI-generated outputs, emphasising why clinicians must remain vigilant when implementing these technologies in patient care, education, and research.

This essential introduction provides the shared vocabulary and conceptual framework needed to engage with the rapidly evolving field of AI in cardiovascular medicine while promoting thoughtful, responsible adoption.
