We are in rural Yunnan, home to China's last matrilineal society. Here, women are at the heart of family life, running the household and preserving family traditions across generations.
Among the Mosuo people, families live together under one roof, and the concept of conventional marriage does not exist. Instead, children are raised within their mother's family, while fathers traditionally live separately and play a different role in family life. In some cases, children may not even know who their biological father is until later in life.
The Mosuo are a unique ethnic group living in the mountains of Yunnan and Sichuan, where centuries-old traditions continue to shape daily life in ways rarely seen elsewhere in the world.
