After a total knee replacement, we spend a LOT of time talking about bending and straightening the knee.
But your knee also needs a little rotation.
During normal walking, the tibia — your shin bone — naturally rotates slightly as your foot contacts the ground, your knee bends to absorb your body weight, and then your leg prepares to push you forward.
After knee replacement surgery, pain, swelling, stiffness, and guarding can reduce this normal rotational movement. That can contribute to a stiff-legged walking pattern, a foot that turns outward, shorter steps, or extra compensation from the hip and ankle.
That’s why an exercise like the one shown here may still be useful after a total knee replacement.
The goal isn’t to aggressively twist your new knee. It’s to gradually restore the small amount of comfortable rotation that normally occurs during walking.
Remember: good knee mobility isn’t just about reaching 0° extension and 120° flexion.
Sometimes improving the way you walk means working on the movements between those numbers too.
