How to Create a Swimlane Diagram in ClickCharts

Click New Blank, then add swimlanes from the Swimlane symbol library. Right-click the swimlane and select Edit Swimlane to add or delete a lane. Rename each lane by double-clicking its label. Customize the pool or individual lanes as needed, then switch to the Flowchart symbol library to add process steps. Connect the symbols to show the workflow, then click Save when you're finished.

Click New Blank to start a new diagram. Use the Symbol Panel in the left sidebar to add swimlanes. Click the Symbol Panel header and select Swimlane. Choose a pool type, then click on the canvas to place it. Add additional pools or lanes as needed to represent the departments, teams, or individuals involved in your process.

To add or delete a swimlane, select the swimlane, then right-click it and choose Edit Swimlane. To add a lane, select Add Swimlane on Left or Add Swimlane on Right. To delete a lane, select Delete Swimlane from Left or Delete Swimlane from Right.

To change the appearance of an entire pool, select the pool and click Fill to change its color. Click Line to modify the pool's outline color and line style. Double-click the pool label to rename it. Click and drag the pool to reposition it, and use the square handles to resize it as needed.
Double-click a lane label to rename it according to the department, team, or role it represents. To format an individual lane instead of the entire pool, first select the pool, then click the specific lane you want to edit. You can then use Fill and Line to customize that lane independently. Use the square handles to adjust the lane's width. If you want all swimlanes to have the same width, right-click the swimlane, choose Edit Swimlane, then enable the All Lanes Equal Width option.

Once your swimlanes are in place, click the Symbol Panel header again and select Flowchart to access the flowchart symbols. Choose a symbol, such as a process, decision, or start/end symbol, then click on the canvas to place it within the appropriate swimlane. To place the same symbol multiple times, hold Shift while clicking on the canvas.

Double-click any flowchart symbol to enter text describing each step in the process. Arrange the symbols by clicking and dragging them into position, and use the square handles to resize them as needed. To customize a symbol, select it and click Fill to change its color. Click Line to modify the outline color and line style.

To connect the process steps, select a connector from the Symbol Panel. Click where the connector should begin, then click again where it should end. You can enable Auto-connect New Symbols in the lower-right corner of the window to automatically connect newly placed symbols to the previously added symbol.

To edit a connector, click the line to select it. Drag the square handles to adjust the connection points or reshape the connector. Click Line to change the connector's color and line style.

Continue adding symbols and connectors until the workflow clearly shows how tasks move between swimlanes. When your swimlane diagram is complete, click Save to store your work.
