Build the free AI engineer project I generate in this video: https://nextwork.ai/projects/5468373c-7c4d-4651-9d38-f1b5b70e83bc?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=nextwork&utm_campaign=desc&utm_content=ai-engineer-roadmap
This is the simplest way to become an AI engineer in 2026 without a degree.
An AI engineer is a software engineer who builds products on top of models other people have trained, and then proves they work.
I went through 400 job postings for this video, and three out of four of them don't require a degree.
This is a realistic roadmap, and it's four levels.
1. build
Shipping real software. Python, connecting software through APIs, storing data in a database like Postgres, and getting your code live with Git and a cloud provider like AWS.
2. connect
Putting AI models into your own code. Structured outputs, RAG over your company's own documents, giving the model tools, and letting it run on its own as an agent.
3. prove
Proving it works for real people. Evals, tracing, cost and speed, and deciding what happens when the AI gets it wrong.
4. land
Getting hired. Where to aim, checking what the job posting actually says, showing your projects, and the AI system design interview.
The best way to learn all of this is hands-on projects.
NextWork is free, and every project builds a portfolio of your work that you can show recruiters.
If you don't find the project you want, hit Create and generate your own from a job description: https://nextwork.ai
THE PROMPTS
Go to https://nextwork.ai and hit Create.
Paste one of these into the box that asks what you want to learn.
Where the prompt says job description, paste the job ad you're going for.
I used Notion's early career AI engineer posting: https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/notion/85947779-6b87-466a-98bc-30a640448c28
level one, the prompt I run in the video

I want to become an AI engineer, and I'm on level one: build, which is shipping real software.
Using the job description below, create one project that proves I can write Python, call an API, store data in a database like Postgres, use Git, and deploy my code so it runs without my laptop.
The company is a big e-commerce website that gets thousands of customer emails a day and wants an assistant to answer its customer emails. For this level, there's no AI yet. The project should take each new customer email, look up that customer's order through an API, save the email and the order in a database, and run in the cloud.
It should end with something I can show a recruiter.

level two, the prompt I put on screen
Run it in the generator, link your level one project, and add the job ad.
Take what you built in level one and get a model to read your data and hand it back as JSON. Then let it answer questions from your own documents and give it one tool.
Level three is proving it works for real people.
You learn that with real users, so there is no prompt for it.
