OpenAI just released dots, an AI agent with its own computer that works for you 24/7, even while you sleep. But the idea isn't new. A free, open-source agent called Hermes, from Nous Research, has been doing much of this for months.

What they share:
• Both keep working while you sleep
• Both remember you between chats
• Both live in apps like Slack
• Both can stop and ask before a risky step

Where they differ:
• Where it runs: your dot lives on OpenAI's computer in the cloud. Hermes runs wherever you put it: your laptop (only while it's awake), a $5 rented server, or Nous's own cloud.
• The brain: dots run on one model, GPT-6 Astra. Hermes lets you pick from hundreds of AI models and swap any time.
• Price: dots come with ChatGPT Pro (from $100/month) or Business Premium, not Plus. Hermes is free, and you pay only for the model you use. Some models are free; most people end up on a cheap paid one.
• Setup: a dot is almost zero setup. Hermes means installing it, choosing a model, connecting your chat apps and locking it down yourself.
• Safety: OpenAI monitors your dot and can pause it. With Hermes, keeping it safe is your job.
