Using a Grigri and a standard belay device has advantages in many climbing situations.
When it's time to rappel, the Grigri person can descend (usually first) on a single strand of rope.
.
This is one of several ways to do it.
.
✅If the second pre-rigs their rappel device on a sling/tether extension AND adds an autoblock, this fixes both strands of the rope. Now, the first person can rappel on either strand with a Grigri.
✅Note: The second can clip their autoblock and carabiner on the rope, and then clip the autoblock to the anchor while the Grigri person is rappelling. Depending on the ledge and position of the master point, doing this can prevent the second person from being yanked around when the rope is under tension from the first person.
➡️ The stacked rappel is not just for beginners. It can be good practice for all skill levels, because it increases your efficiency and reduces your risk.
.
This post discusses techniques and methods used in vertical rope work. If you do them wrong, you could die. Always practice vertical rope techniques with a qualified instructor in a controlled environment before ever using them in a real climbing situation.
