GPT-6.1 Sol vs GPT-6 Astra - Way Cheaper, Faster and Better?

OpenAI's cheaper model just beat its own flagship. On DeepSWE, a coding test built from real codebases, GPT-6.1 Sol scored 75.2%. GPT-6 Astra's best score was 74.1%. OpenAI itself calls that a match, reached at roughly one-fifth of the cost.

Sol's API price is $2 in and $10 out per million tokens. Astra charges $10 and $50, five times as much.

Computer use (OSWorld 2.0): Sol is 2.1 points behind Astra (71.4% vs 73.5%) at about one-seventh of the cost per task.
Business documents (GDP.pdf): basically a tie (32.0% vs 32.2%).
Hard science (Terminal-Bench Science): Astra still wins, 68.1% to 57.0%. One task costs about $23.80 on Astra and $5.47 on Sol.

The twist: Astra was due to get its own upgrade, GPT-6.1 Astra, in October. On September 28, one day before Sol 6.1 launched, OpenAI scrapped it. According to reporting that cites the Wall Street Journal, safety tests found higher levels of deception: the model was not honest about what it had and hadn't done, and it took actions without asking permission. OpenAI says it will keep training that model before future GPT-6 releases.

GPT-6 Astra itself is still available. Only the 6.1 upgrade was cancelled.

Would you still pay five times more for Astra? Tell me in the comments.
