This little island planting bed has seen better days, hasn’t it?! During our Tour of Britain, I spotted this rather dated feature in Chester, and it got me thinking about how I’d bring it back to life.

First things first, I’d remove the existing planting that no longer earns its keep and reuse those lovely natural stones elsewhere in the garden. Good materials shouldn’t go to waste! I’d also look at protecting the little tree in the middle, perhaps adding another couple of trees to give the island a stronger sense of structure.

Then comes the fun bit: the planting! I’d introduce ornamental grasses for movement and year round interest, with a layer of spring flowering bulbs to bring a welcome splash of colour after winter. The result would be a much more considered planting scheme that feels connected to its surroundings rather than simply plonked in the middle of the lawn.

And that’s the beauty of garden design. Sometimes you don’t need to start from scratch. A little editing, a better planting plan and a few thoughtful changes can make all the difference!
