Durston X-Dome 1+ vs Outdoor Vitals Cirq, which ultralight backpacking tent is the better choice? In this video, I compare a freestanding tent with a trekking-pole tent to help you decide which design better fits the way you backpack.

The Durston X-Dome 1+ and Outdoor Vitals Cirq are two compelling options for backpackers looking for a lightweight solo tent with more usable space than many traditional one-person shelters. But they solve that problem in very different ways.

The X-Dome 1+ uses a dedicated freestanding pole structure, while the Cirq uses trekking poles to reduce the need for additional tent poles. In this head-to-head comparison, I look at the tradeoffs that matter on an actual backpacking trip, including:

• Weight and packed size
• Interior space and livability
• Setup and ease of use
• Campsite flexibility
• Ventilation and condensation management
• Weather protection and stability
• Freestanding versus trekking-pole construction
• Price and overall value
• Which type of backpacker each tent fits best

A trekking-pole tent may save weight and pack down smaller, but a freestanding tent can be easier to position and use on difficult campsites. Neither design is automatically better for everyone. The right choice depends on where you camp, how much setup flexibility you want, whether you already hike with trekking poles, and which compromises matter most to you.

Which would you choose: the Durston X-Dome 1+ or the Outdoor Vitals Cirq? Let me know in the comments, especially if you have used either tent in the backcountry.
