The fire wasn’t the only thing moving fast…

When your phone rings and it’s the battalion commander on an active wildfire, you already know it’s probably not going to be a normal tow.

While scouting miles off the nearest road for a place to cut a dozer line and stop the fire, the track bar on his truck decided it had other plans. That left him stranded deep in the high desert, with the fire getting closer by the minute.

So David and I loaded up the 4x4 wrecker and headed straight into the burn. We crossed blackened ground, climbed through the rough desert, and worked our way back into the green ahead of the fire to reach the broken truck before things got a whole lot more exciting.

What started as “just another recovery” quickly turned into some of the sketchiest off-road towing we’ve done. As the afternoon winds kicked up, the fire behavior changed fast, smoke started building, and getting stuck ourselves suddenly wasn’t an option. We had one job: get the truck hooked up, get it out of the danger zone, and make it back to the road before the fire made that decision for us.

After some serious wheeling, plenty of careful driving, and more than a little luck, we made it back to pavement safely before towing the truck an hour back to town so it could finally get the repairs it deserved. And all at no charge thanks to you guys watching these videos.

A huge thank you to all of the wildland firefighters risking everything to protect our communities. Hopefully this little detour got one more truck back in the fight.
