I had a project come up that had an interesting challenge: I needed to get an arbitrary number of microcontrollers to talk to each other without necessarily having an address associated to each device.
Since there didn't seem to be an existing protocol, it seemed I needed to design one of my own.

Fortunately, this coincided with another topic I'd been studying recently - the OSI model.
I've been studying that because I've been learning about how the internet works for an upcoming video, and how PCIe works for my own enjoyment. Both seemed to rely on the OSI model, so it seemed like it'd be a useful thing to understand.

This project then served as an excuse to try and design my own communication protocol and to really solidify the concepts I'd been studying.

Starting with layer 1, or the PHY.
This devices job is simply to ensure the transmission of a block of data, synchronizing the transfer process, and detecting collisions.

I've still got some work before I can call this device done, but still, I think what I've got so far seems to do the job really well.
