Can more megapixels change how you photograph insects? After two weeks with the Sony A7R VI and 100mm macro lens, I explore how stepping back and cropping can give you more depth of field, fewer disturbed subjects and greater freedom in the edit—plus the trade-offs of high-resolution photography.

A clarification on depth of field: the extra megapixels don’t increase it directly. Stepping back and shooting at lower magnification changes the depth of field; the resolution gives me room to crop afterwards. Cropping costs pixels and enlarges blur too, so this is a practical trade-off between detail, working distance and getting the shot—not a claim that backing away always produces a better image.
