I planned for inflation, travel, vehicles and home repairs, but seven years of retirement still brought several surprises—including a 20% property-tax increase, major dental work, rising insurance costs, expensive veterinary care and a $27 lunch. Fortunately, equity growth has more than offset these expenses. That growth has also allowed us to intentionally spend more on better travel, family meals, grandchildren’s education and experiences together.
