Hands under the tap: an IR obstacle sensor sees them, its OUT pin pulls LOW, and a low-level-trigger 5 V relay module closes the contacts so a 12 V solenoid valve opens. Hands away, the relay clicks off and the water stops.
Circuit: 12 V supply to the relay COM/NO contacts and the valve, valve - to 12 V -; IR module and relay module on 5 V; a 1N4007 across the valve coil (band toward the + side) so the coil's turn-off spike cannot damage the relay contacts (in the simulation the contact sees about 12.9 V with the diode; without it the spike is far higher). Relay input about 3 mA, relay coil about 70 mA, valve about 0.5 A (assumed), well inside the 10 A contacts.
Notes: the valve is normally closed and may need minimum water pressure. Use a food-contact-rated valve for drinking water, and keep mains voltage away from water. Sunlight and ambient IR, and dark or shiny surfaces, change the sensor's range.
Assumed values: valve 6 W / 0.5 A with about 40 mH, relay input about 1 kΩ, IR module about 30 mA. Dramatised: the hands, the water, the pipe turning blue, the instant response and the sensor range. Checked in ngspice, not measured on hardware.
